Dolly Dwyer chosen for 4-H Hall of Fame

Great Falls volunteer chosen for 4-H Hall of Fame: Dolly Dwyer got started in the organization as a 10-year-old in 1930 and remained involved for decades

GREAT FALLS (AP) — An 85-year-old woman here is set for induction into the national 4-H Hall of Fame and hopes her fractured wrist doesn’t prevent her presence at the ceremony Friday near Washington, D.C.

Dolly Dwyer is ‘‘exactly the kind of person who should be in the national Hall of Fame,’’ said Kirk Astroth, the state 4-H program director.

‘‘Her record of achievement over the past 60-something years is above and beyond the call of duty.’’

Dwyer broke her wrist in a recent fall and underwent surgery, said her husband, Terry Dwyer, a former managing editor for the Great Falls Tribune.

She hopes her doctor gives her a green light Wednesday to head for the East Coast on Thursday.

‘‘This award will never happen again for me,’’ Dwyer said. (Read More)

Commentary: 4-H Week, Oct. 1-7, inspires salute from area club alumna

Lydia Flood, 19, a resident of the town of Oakfield, WI, is a student at UW-FDL and a former member of the Weeping Willow 4-H Club of Fond du Lac County. She wrote this commentary in observance of National 4-H Week.

What is 4-H all about? It is not just for country kids. 4-H clubs are found in cities, too. So no matter if you live in an urban area, the city, or a farm, 4-H can be for you.

4-H is good wholesome fun. Members learn responsibilities, leadership and sportsmanship. A 4-H club is composed of members age 9 through 18.

The 4-H motto is "To Make the Best Better."

4-H Clubs are available in almost every community in this area. The members are most likely the people you know around you. They could be your neighbor, your boss or your child's soccer coach.

The people involved with 4-H are active members of the community who volunteer because they simply enjoy helping out.

4-H clubs help their kids develop useful and confidence boosting skills as they grow to need them more and more in everyday life. (Read More)

HEAD, HEART, HANDS & HEALTH

National 4-H Week is an opportunity for group to make everyone aware of what they're about

BY REBECCA HOLM - VICTORIA ADVOCATE

Memorial High School senior Jordan Brown has participated in 4-H since he was 8 years old.
"It's pretty much my life," the 17-year-old said.

Being involved in 4-H is not just about raising cattle. It's about learning new skills and giving back to the community, said Henry Wood, Victoria County 4-H youth leader and chairman of the Adult Leaders Association.

Sunday marked the beginning of National 4-H Week, "an opportunity to make the public aware of different activities available to the youth for 4-H," Wood said. "It's also an opportunity for 4-H to say thank you to the community that has supported them in years past."

In Victoria County (Texas) the week got started with a Food Challenge at 4-H Activity Center. Similar to an Iron Chef Competition, students were broken into teams, given ingredients and were challenged to create a dish, said Kristy Synatschk, 4-H and Youth Development Extension Agent for Victoria County.
